Every institution begins with a conviction. Ours began with a simple observation, and a refusal to accept it.
How the idea began
The idea for SaiMar Future Leaders Academy grew out of the founders’ work with young people and their experience across science, enterprise and community life. Again and again they met talented, motivated young people who lacked one thing: structured support to turn their potential into progress. The Academy began as an answer to that gap, first as a focused leadership initiative under SaiMar, and then as a dedicated academy with a clear and lasting purpose.
The problem we set out to solve
In The Gambia and across much of Africa, young people are the majority of the population and the greatest source of future prosperity. Yet too many are underserved by the systems around them. Access to mentorship, career exposure, entrepreneurial skills and leadership development remains uneven and, for many, out of reach. The result is potential that goes undeveloped, not for lack of ability, but for lack of opportunity. The Academy exists to close that gap deliberately and durably.
The journey so far
What started as a commitment to invest in the next generation has grown into a structured programme spanning academic excellence, career development, entrepreneurship and leadership. Each stage has been shaped by listening to young people, working with mentors and professionals, and building something designed to last rather than to impress. The Academy continues to grow carefully, adding programmes, partners and mentors while keeping its focus firmly on the young people it serves.
Our long-term vision
Our long-term vision is an Academy recognised across The Gambia, Africa and beyond as a home for future leaders: a lasting institution that develops thousands of young people, connects them into a strong network of changemakers, and helps shape a generation ready to lead with skill and integrity. The journey has only begun, and we are building it to endure.
